I have a 2001 Ranger 4x4, with automatic transmission and the SOHC 4.0 V6. Tonight after I started the truck, I sat and talked to a couple of friends while the engine idled. I suddenly noticed that the ABS light was glowing, I turned the the truck off, restarted, and the light didn't show anymore. It drove and broke fine on the 30 minute drive home, and the light never came back on. Any ideas as to the cause of this, should I be worried, does it store a code, should I take it in? the truck has 64,xxx miles on it and I've never had this happen before. As always, thanks for any help!
Just keep an eye on it. If you get motivated, maybe pull the front wheels off and check out the ABS speed sensors and the toothed rings, make sure they aren't caked with crud. Also, check out the the rear ABS speed sensor that's located on the rear differential, make sure the electrical connector and wiring checks out OK, etc.
Something to keep in mind is that, if your truck starts shifting funny and the speedo goes wacky along with the ABS light glowing, then you have a bad rear speed sensor. Fairly cheap and easy to replace.
Unfortunately, if the ABS issue persists beyond that, you'll have to get a shop to pull the codes, and it will have to be one that has a fairly sophisticated Ford scan tool. Such is the nature of 4WABS.

I went to the dealer [I've got a friend that works there], and had the code read. It seems that the problem was a malfunction of the ABS ECU. He ran some sort of test with the scanner and it came back fine. He reset the warning light, and said to watch it because it could have just been a "glitch". If it comes back on the ECU has to be replaced [$230 his cost].
