Body styles

Where could I see pics of the different body styles? I keep seeing references to style side, step side, etc. and I am not sure of the differences. I am looking at getting a 79 supercab 4x4 for the drive train and putting my 78 body on it but my sides don't have the same contours as the other. Thanks!

The step side is a lot differant than your bed on your 78. Look at some of the gallerys, you can do a search for the step side in the gallerys.

A lot of the confusion is in terminology. Step side and fleet side are Chevy terms while flare side and style side are Ford terms.

Flare side and step side = Narrow box with fenders outside the box.

Style side and fleet side = Wide box with fenders inside the box.

You can see the difference here.

The 78 is the same as this 79.

The 79 4x4 is like the pickup at the bottom of the brochure. My 78 doesn't have the "flare" at the bottom of the truck. Is that the difference between fleet and flare? I am assuming the trim along the top (along the turn signals and such) would be the same. Is this correct? I want to use the bed floor and a couple pieces of trim (below the top of tailgate and passenger side from door to turn signal along with temp gauge and maybe door panels) that I need. Thanks guys!

Flare means Fenders OUTSIDE the BOX

I think you meant Styleside vs Flareside.

Oops! I did mean style side. The difference I am talking about is on the bottom of the body. One is contoured folloeing up and around the fenders the other is not.

78 and 79 Ford pickups were basically identical as far as body style. Does your 78 have the rocker panel mouldings(chrome trim along the lower body sides)? If it does, and the 79 that you're looking at does not, that may be why the two trucks seem to look different to you.

That must be it only in reverse. Mine does not have the lower trim and the one I am looking at (in not so great pictures ONLY so far) seems to. I couldn't tell it was trim since the truck is white and light colored primer and it all kinda blends together.

John, from his posts it seems his concern is/was:
which is the Styleside & which is the Flareside?

It wasn't from one year to another.

Ranger ...What was this word ( folloeing ) supposed to be ?

Flowing or folllowing ?

Following! Yes, I was just trying to determine if there was more than one body style that has the fenders inside the bed and if the upper trim pieces were the same in a given year. I thought that there was only one but the 4x4 that I am looking at getting the frame/drivetrain from appeared to have a different style. It appeared that the bottom was contoured but I believe now that it is only a different trim package. If the lower trim was removed I think the panels would be shaped the same as mine. Is this correct? Mine is a Ranger!

All the sheet metal is the same from 73-79.

There were ALL SORTS of trim combinations involving chrome.

The main differences were in the TRIM LINE of the trucks.

Custom, Ranger, Ranger Explorer, XLT,and the Lariat.

But the panels are shaped the same right? couldn't the front fenders and bed sides be used from a truck of the same year but different trim packages and wouldn't the upper trim from turn signal to turn signal be interchangeable?

The BULK of the chrome trim options were on *Styleside* trucks only.

My truck is a Styleside.

From the rear of the cab forward the trucks are the same but that's where it ends.

You can't put Normal Lariat trim on a Flareside box.

Ford made special *Flareside Trim* and special *Styleside Trim*
