Pulling my '74 out of the moth ***** as its time to do some work on my Bronco. Im having some carb issues. When Im going down the road, it runs okay, but on take off or between shifts, Ive got to play with the accelerator to get it moving. Once in a while it pops back through the carb, and have had a few nice flames shoot out the carb occasionaly. I did a search here but didn't find anything specific to my problem.
My next problem is that the motor was a replant from a previous owner. I was told it was a 390, however, when I buy parts for a 390 to replace (distributer cap etc.) the dont seem to match. Any tips on identifiying what motor I have. Theres no stickers or stampings that I can find. Also the tag is gone off the carb, so Im not sure what I would be asking for as far as a rebuild kit.
My first guess would be accelerator pump isn't working on the carb. With engine off, look down carb and move throttle. You should see two streams of gas squirt into engine. The streams should be steady while the throttle is moved. Also check the timing.
Count the number of valve cover bolts, this will identify the engine.
