I just purchased a Lincoln 225Amp A/C welder for $100.00. I need to make a table to weld on. Any of you guys/gals have ideas to share as far as materials and dimensions? I don't need anything huge. Just something for general purpose.
Mine is 2'x 4' x 3/8's thick steel with 3 1" x 2" stringers welded under it length wise for strength. I set it across 2 saw horses when using it and leave it propped up against the garage wall the rest of the time. Leave it bare and it works great for just grounding the plate, then just clamp your work piece to the plate and start welding. Make sure the edges are square and it'll also make a good template for 90 degree welds. Every once in awhile I'll have to knock the splatter off but that only takes a few minutes with a angle grinder. I just finished building a log splitter (about 250 pounds) and welded everything together on the plate and it didn't bow any.
I just made one by taking the grill unit & tank out of an old roll around BBQ table. It was slated for the trash pile but now it will be put to good use. I welded some braces & sheet metal on top. I have two swing up leaves on the ends where I can expand the table out. I still have more work to do on it. :-)
Hi all....you want the table as thick as reasonably possible, that way you can tack weld stuff to it for welding things straight. If its too thin it will warp, thats not good. My table is made from 1/2" thick plate steel, 4 foot x 6 foot on 4" sq. tube legs. Its heavy, 600 lbs, but it works great! Good luck.
Also, weld a couple hooks underneath it to hang your hood and strikers, etc. A rod box welded to the underside helps when searching for another rod. Blow a couple holes in it and mount a vise on one corner. It makes for a sturdy table when fabbed out of 1/2 or thicker plate. At the shop we got a piece of angle iron welded to the side for placing the framin square on. Also stick a couple welders magnets on it and yer good to go.
