Have an 02 150 Screw 4X4 --- I want to replace the battery.....
I've got a few questions: Please help me if you can....
1.) How do I take the stock motocraft out?
2.) I've come down to 2 batteries.....
a.) Optima red top 34/78
b.) The "upgraded" motocraft battery w/ 850cca
Now --- Which one? I know the motocraft will fit like a glove.... Does the Optima fit well with the stock compartmnet setup?
Any hints/ ideas appreciated....
To get the old battery out, remove terminals and plastic cover and on the side of the battery toward the engine there is a hold down bolt, undo this and lift battery out. I wouldnt waste the money on the optima, the motorcraft is a direct drop in and I dont think the optima will drop in quite as easy, and if you need help taking the old one out......
The Optima fits like a charm. There are some mounting adapters that snap onto the bottom part of the battery that allows you to use the factory mounting locations. Of course, you'll lose the cover, but that didn't bother me.
The optimas are nice, but really over rated. Unless you have a wierd mounting position, you won't see any benefit from the use of one.
There are only a few major battery mfg'ers in NA any more, Champion/Exide, Interstate, and one other (I can't recall ofhand), plus a bunch of smaller job shops. Most batterys that you see in any name brand store more than likely came from a Champion/Exide facility. The only difference will be the store warranty, tag name, and possibly the color of the battery.
Right now you can pick up some Group 65 850 CCA (with out a doubt the best auto battery group wise) at Sam's club for right around $50 and that includes a 2 year free replacement wnty plus a 6 yr prorated warranty. They'll even install it free of charge if you want them to.
