How much rust is too much?

I am looking at a '76 F250 SC. Seems to run pretty good but I am concerned about some rust on the body. It looks like it lived near the ocean for awhile. The undercarriage is not too bad but on the roof, above the doors and in the bed it has some rust. The cab mounts and inner fender wells look pretty decent. Any thoughts?
Thanks

It deffinitely runs the price DOWN. As long as any parts aren't rusted that aren't replaceable then it depends on your abilities to repair them or how much you want to pay to have it done! I restore old autos and by nature I have to do rust repair. I shy away from vehicles that have rust in seams. If seams are good but rust on panels then I will tackle it.

where I live, rust occurs on ALL winter vehicles in about 5 years. As long as the frame itself ain't rusted, then there's hope. A rusted bodied 4x4 around here goes for about $1000.00 as long as it runs good. Which is why we travel to Oklahoma once a year.

Around here we have a general rule of thumb when it comes to pricing trucks:

Regardless of condition, if it runs and drives it's worth $1000. If it has working 4wd it's worth $1500.
That's just a good starting point, ya know?

My highboy was the perfect example of too much rust. I could see the bench seat from inside the engine bay... through the Firewall. I could see the bench seat from inside the fender wells right about where there used to be a cab mount. I could see the bench seat from under the truck. So I guess it's safe to say if you can seethe bench seat from anywhere but inside the truck... it's usually too much rust. I still bought the truck, cause suprisingly the frame is still solid and where I live you only see highboys once every 2 years. There's a picture of wheel well damage in my gallery, in "The Highboy Strips" gallery, if interested.

Rust has its upsides. The rust is the only thing keeping the neighborhood kids from playing on my truck. I live near the ocean, so rust isn't a choice. It's mandatory.
