Castrol GTX

Hello everyone. I just thought I would give Castrol some free advertising. My dads 1996 GMC Jimmys has 280,000 miles on it. It has had three tranny swaps, two rearend swaps, and countless ball joints and tie rod ends. I dont know if it was good engineering on gm s part or the oil. We had to replace the oil pan gaskets and valve cover gaskets on it yesterday. We thought that we would see all kinds of wear but there was absolutly no wear or dirtyness. It was as shinny as the day it was made.

Just curious. What were the oil change intervals your father used with the Castrol? Were they 3,000 miles or were they greater. And what brand oil filter was used. Also was this a new bought vehicle where you changed the oil from the beginning. Castrol GTX is a good oil for 3,000 mile OCI's, a bit overpriced though. From what I've seen in used oil analysis' is that once you get past 3,000 miles the Castrol GTX seems to "deplete" it's additives/protection "package" and engine wear seems to increase. But every vehicle is different. That's why it's good to at least run the Castrol GTX to 5,000 miles and then do an UOA. If it's good then you're good to continue. If it's not then cut back to 3,000 miles OCI's. You won't do any harm running it to 5,000 miles once.

GTX is good oil, or I should say: GTX is as good as any other API licensed motor oil. IMO, your Dad's engine would have looked just as clean if he had used QS, Pennzoil, Shell, Mobil, Havoline, Valvoline, etc. etc.

My dad bought the truck new. He changed the oil every 4500 miles. The oil filter he used was the fram sure grips. Now he uses fram highmileage oil filters. wavinwayne, my dad wouldnt put pennzoil in his truck even if it was free. I dont know why but he despises them.
