Alt starts discharging at 1800 RPM - brand new alternator. Old did the same. Belt is good, tensioner is good, idler pulley is good, belt is tight. Batteries are new. Brand new positive cable, grounds are good. At 1800 RPM regardless of load battery light comes on, lights dim, and volts drop to 12.1 on a volt meter. Please help
same thing was happening to me. but since you got a new one well maybe its still messed up take it back and try another.....if that doesnt work well hopefully the electrical gods will see this post. i such at electrical things. good luck
After the engine starts it can take up to 1 Min. before the alternator starts charging, regardless of engine speed. Is this normal? If so Why? This the 2nd alternator I put in, both seem to have the same behaviour.

it starts showing higher voltage once the gpr relay de activates.
the alternator doesn't charge for approxaimately 40 seconds after start up its controlled by the computer and it actually has nothing to do with glow plugs. the glow plug are on for various times depending on engine and air temps (anyhwhere from 0to 120 seconds)but the alt never charges until 40 seconds. not shorter not longer. so yes it is normal.
