I own a 94' F-150 4x4 5-speed w/ a 4.9L EFI and 129Kmi.
I have a major coolant leak at the very back of the engine. It is impossible to see the source, but it runs down where the engine and transmission bolt together. Someone told me it cold be the freeze plugs or the water jacket core plugs. I don't know where they are located on the 4.9L and, as I said, you can't see the origin of the leak from th engine bay or from the underneath of the truck. You can only see the path of the leak until it disappears above where the transmission/engine bot together. It is very important I fix it fast so any help you guys can offer would be great. Thanks.
Sounds like a core plug to me. Make sure to thoroughly inspect the clutch components while you're in there. It would suck to have to take it apart again in a few months because of a clutch problem.
Since the post, I found out it was the core plug. Problem is, I've heard that in order to get to the plug and replace it, I'll have to pull the motor or drop the transmission. Sounds like fun, but I'd like to be sure there is no other way to do this before I dive into that task. Anybody done this before? Or can you at least help me with a step by step? Thanks
Pulling the 5 speed is actually quite easy. The biggest obstacles are gettting the clutch line out of the slave and removing the shifter. The clutch line you have to push the whole connector in, then push the little white sleeve in, then pull the line out. You will probably have to wrestle it for a while. The shifter you have to remove the nut from one side of the stud and reinstall it on the opposite side. When you tighten it down it will draw out the stud and release the shifter. This will all make more sense when you look at the pieces.
where is the core plug on these engines located? I have an '80 I6 that is leaking the same way but no water from the freeze plugs. I scraped the engine fairly clean and then used degreaser to clean it more so I could see the freeze plugs.
