I just bought a '78 ford rear end for my '78 Shortbed. At first all I needed was a Backing plate for the left rear wheel. Now I may want to change gears in the rear end but I don't know where to find the spec. Can anyone feel me in? How do I find out. Thanks

The second line on the tag should start with either 2, 3, or even 4 followed by either a space or a letter, then two more numbers. Like this
2 72 or 3L50. First one would be 2:72, second one would be 3:50 with posi. Hope this helps. Mike

If there is no tag, or too mangled to read.
You will have to put a mark on the pinion yolk and one on the axle shaft. Turn the axle shaft and count the number of revolutions the pinion yolk makes with one revolution of the axle shaft. Ex: pinion = 2.75 revs. shaft = 1 rev.
ratio = 2.75:1
When you check this, jack up just one rear wheel and leave the tranny in neutral. Then spin the tire around twice and count the number of times the driveshaft spins (say 3.5 times = 3.5 ratio.)
