My dad's 88 B2 has normal power when it's cold but completly lacks power once it warms up. The other day it started having problems even when it was cold. My dad says that he can put his foot the floor and it seems like the B2 is running on only three cylinders. He got it home the other day and parked it, put his foot to the floor and it only sounded like the engine was at half throttle. Once he shut it off it smelled really bad like unburned gas. We had just got back from having it Echecked(ohio) and it passed with flying colors. Also our mechanic looked at it. There are no codes from the computer and the fuel pressure was within specs. We are at a loss as to what to look at next. We don't have the money to get it properly check out, any ideas???
P.S. He can have his foot the the floor and only get up to 25 miles per hour. Also the Tranny does not want to shift, he has to take his foot off the gas to get it to shift, whether this is part of the problem or not I'm not sure.
Just to be sure: "no codes from the computer" as in all pass codes or does the computer not respond to the self-test?
It sounds like it's misfiring real bad. Are you getting spark at all cylinders? Compression on all cylinders? A cylinder balance test may identify non-contributing cylinders.
mrshorty,
The mechanic said that the computer was clean, no codes showing but it did respond with an all pass. As far as misfireing, that is pretty much what it sounds like to me also. However the fact that it passed Echeck is confusing and passed with FLYING colors seem suspision to me, unless the cat-converter is super good at removing all unburnt fuel. The fact that it usually works find when cold but starts acting up when hot is also confusing. I would think that if it was an ignition problem such as a no spark situation that it would do it cold also? As far as compression I will see what I can do about arranging a time do check, I have the equipment but not the time.
Thanks for the reply!
Could it be the hotair warm up valve be stuck open giving the engine very hot intake air even when it already warmed up. It would seem that sence its only doing it while warm. Also it woulndt make the computer show codes at all.
check your compression and your coolnt levels i tought mine was getting to much gas but it turned out that i got a creacked head and the crack would just open up when it got hot
