Ferarri VS Lamborghini
We're talking a Ferrarri Berlinetta Lusso
Or the fabulous 250 GTO
Our next-door neighbor had one of these when i was growing up, a 250 GTE
A 330 GTS Spyder
A 365 GTB-4, othwise known as the Daytona. Fastest I've ever travelled in a car was in one of those.
As far as the sound- there is nothing like the sound of an older Ferrarri carburated V-12 at full-scream to make your hairs stand on end. Nothing. Yeah, they're expensive. And no, they aren't durable or especially reliable either. But Enzo Ferrarri was a gearhead of the nth degree, and he built cars that had a soul. If you ever have an opportunity to drive or ride in a pre-injection car, take it.
the only ferrari thats ever really cought my eye was the old f40's. i dont really know anything about either brand. not a big fan of the high reving v12 something tells me their not that reliable. or not the cheapest engines to fix.
i did see the new ferrari 360 a couple of years ago at an auto show, it wasnt to bad looking. but then the dude had to start it up, it sounded like my homelight weed wacker when he was revving it.
I understand completely. I have friends that think I am mad for driving a 63 Mini (yet I think its Gods personal gift to the driver). They ask:
Why would you drive a car where you have to have your knees are around your ears to fit in it?
How is it practical?
What if you need to carry people?
I could retort with things such as low weight, great moment of inertia, wheels are ar each corner (= rough ride, but great handling)
They just don't understand it.
Lamborghinis and Ferrari's are the same. If I drove home in a Ferrari to see my parents and saw my Mom, she would first slap me, then ask me how much it costs, then say: WHY? Whats the point of being able to go that fast if the speed limits 70 anyway? My diesel VW gets better mileage than that. etc.
If I saw Dad first, he would try to steal the keys of me.
Lamborghinis and Ferrari's are a rare and special beast. Yes thier V12 (and V8 and V10) engines rev high, won't be as reliable as a 300 I6, will cost the earth and the moon just to get the service done, let alone if you throw a valve at 9k rpms.
They are just special cars. While you may have thought your weedwacker sounded just like that 360, I would have been standing in 2 inches of drool if I was there.
There is a Ferrari/Maserati/Bently dealer just a short walk from me. I ride my bike along thier test drive route daily, and occasionally (not everyone gets to test drive a Ferrari) there is a new 430 or a Maserati Spyder gettings its legs stretched. I literally almost fall of my bicycle as I go weak at the knees from the glorious noise - no, music, that emanates from them.
If you own one of these, you know it was created by the finest craftsmen and engineers in the world, and it wasn't built by a machine, it was built with love, care and passion.
I could go on and on about how cars like this are completely illogical, yet utterly compeling, but I think this will make far more of a statement

Its called Rendezvous in Paris.
Claude Lelouch, a French romantic comedy director strapped a movie camera onto the front of his Ferrari 275 GTB, and thrashed it through the streets of Paris on one early August morning of 1976 - there are no stunts performed here, nor are any streets blocked off, just one guy driving the pants of his precious vehicle through one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Interesting bit of trivia. Lamborghini created a 3 tonne monster powered by the V12 engine out of the Contach to tender for the American Armed forces. (i.e. When they tendered for the HMMMV).
When they didn't get the contract, they sold the first (and only) production run to a lot of oil barons (the only people that could put up with its 7MPG thirst)
The thing is a FREAKING UNIT.
Picture of the LM in action
Picture stationary
It would hit 60 in a bit 7 seconds (not bad for a 3 tonne truck in the 80's).
Has to be the greatest symbol of excess EVER.
The LM004 was its final (and ultimate) incarnation. Was powered by a 7.3l alloy Lamborghini V12 Marine engine... It doesn't exist anymore.

art, not transportation.

And I still want an older Ferrarri someday.
But being a bit of a monetary realist (read: Not wealthy), I've always been partial to the Detomaso Panteras... http://www.panteraclub.com/pantera.htm
