I was wonderig if anyone has changed the rubber hoses leading to their remote oil filter location under the front bumper. I noticed mine leaking a little so I decided to give it a shot. I would like to know how difficult it was to do. The local dealer said it was a 3 hour job. But for $400 I figured I can do it myself. The hose assembly cost $200. I have 1998 4.6 with 4 wheel drive.
Replaced mine just before Christmas. Took me 3 hours which included an oil change. The only difficult part was getting access to the bolt located on top of the lh frame rail that holds the oil filter mounting bracket. You may want to replace the oil sending sensor, you have to take the old one off the old hose assembly anyways. As for the replacement cost, I felt ripped off. But what you gonna do. I researched installing an aftermarket unit but couldnt find an adapter to bolt up to my Romeo engine block.
I got the bolt loose that sits between the frame and body. My problem is the hose attachment to the engine block. The front axle for the 4wd is creating the problem. And there is not much room for access to the engine block end of the oil line.
Is there anything special about the hoses? I'm wondering if the hoses on the remote oil filters can be replaced by custom made hydraulic hoses which should cost less than some the prices mentioned? Has anyone experienced a remote oil filter hose failure?
I think the screwing the public gets is because of the connectors on the hoses. I would tend to think any hydraulic hose should serve the purpose but its the fittings that tend to raise the price.
I have the Windsor engine on mine. Turns out the front axle had to be dropped to access the hose connected to the engine. The stealership charged $250.
