Anyone out there had any experience with slick 50 engine additive ?? I have been told that it does wonders for the combustable engine. been considering using it in my 57 223. I have a good running engine and have been told that this stuff could make it last longer. Any advise guys ?? Thanks Roy
I used Slick 50 on a real worn engine when Slick 50 first came out. You could hear a RPM increase, and the oil preasure went up. I credit it with giving me another 50 K out of a shot motor.
However, that was 10 years ago, and it is now a old product. I would expect other products to have been developed that are better.
I think mostly these sort of products coat bearing surfaces with teflon, and help seal the rings. I would not consider them as any sort of long-term repair.
I remember my dad bought Slick 50 when it first came out. He claimed it made the engine smoother and quieter with an increase in performance. I don't use additives because I feel if you change your oil consistently, you shouldn't need additives. I've always had good luck with all my engines and changed the oil and filters on time. Lucas is supposed to be a good oil, however now the new purple oil (can't think of the name) blows Lucas away. I know most of the drag cars have switched to the purple oil and even run it in transmissions.
I remember all the teflon additives that were popular in the early 90's had similar claims, and similar problems. Most of the teflon would get trapped in the oil filter, causing it to clog, and forcing the oil to bypass the filter. A few shops claimed seizure problems after installing some of these products. BTW, if memory serves, Dupont, inventor of teflon, made these companies use the chemical name ptfe, rather than their brand name teflon in their advertising. They didn't feel that teflon would permanantly coat the engine components and would only offer temporary benefits. Also, I asked a crusty old oil engineer about this and other additives once, his reply was something like " if it was that d*** easy to lower friction, don't you think mobil and penzoil etc would be doing it?"

i have had good look with restore in mowers[seems to help the ones that were old enoulf to smoke. a friend and i have had great luck with lucas. one 35o chev was so bad it used a qt in 50 mi. so loose the flywheel would rub the housing going up hills. after lucas just about stopped using oil. and we drove it for another year.
do a google search on slick 50. it is just a scam like most other snake oils. they like many other false products have been sued by the feds and forced to end their marketing. PTFE won't do jack. it won't increase engine life or rpm. Dupont new this which is why slick 50 had to use the words PTFE. PTFE needs 350 degrees to adhere to anything. if your engine even got near that hot than you would have more issues. being that PTFE has a micron size of 40 microns it gets filtered out by the oil filter because most filter down to 20 microns. same goes for the splitfire plugs and prolong oil treatment. they have all been sued and lost. also the lucas stuff is a waste. look at the uoa . low flash point almost zero anti wear additives. just a very thick 40w oil.
My 223 runs well, starts right up, does not use oil to excess and maintains a very respectable oil pressure. So I guess the old saying still applys, IF IT AINT BROKE - DONT FIX IT! Thanks guys. Roy
Most of those additives are really thick, this thickens up the oil in the motor so it does not smoke as much. Just as easy and cheaper to buy a 20-50W motor oil.
Slick 50 is not a thickener like STP. It has a lot of cleaning solvents in it. I first used it in 1993 on my 1955 272. I had poor upper-engine oil supply to the rockerarms. About two weeks after putting in the Slick 50, I noticed that the upper engine oil supply was great. I attributed this to the opening of the oil passages. So, I can't prove that the Slick 50 was the cause of the improved oil flow, but I will continue to use it periodically. Also, the autoparts stores have been running it on sale with four quarts of Quaker State for $12.99 Good luck, John
All my sources agree with the COOE! If there was something better to put in the oil it would be in there. Too many products don't do anything but lighten your wallet.
Royal Purple is one of my friend's Pro Mod sponsors, they pay big contingency bucks and give the racers free oil at the track to promote their product. It's no better than Mobil 1, they just spend more money at the race track than M1.
