I have a '94 F-350 crew cab, 77,000 original miles, 7.3L diesel pre-power stroke. After it warms up, it started surging. I could feel it and also see the tach jump. first thing I thought of was fuel fllter, changed that and it was still the same. So today i started thinking trans. So I turned the overdrive off and it stopped. So as I am driving the overdrive is slipping in and out. It happens mostly at low and mid rpm. I am thinking a trans flush is in order. I called a local trans shop and they said it is bad to flush, as it picks up trash and circulates it around. They said to drain pan, change filter and drain evrything they can. They claim they can get 90% of fluid that way. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Pre 95 E4OD trannies, especially diesels had issues with the torque converter failing. usually the OD clutch starts to slip which causes heat which damages other stuff. Sounds like your problem.
If you are lucky a fluid change will fix it. If you are unlucky, a rebuild is in your future.
I prefer to drop the pan and drain it and the torque converter. This gives you or the shop a chance to inspect the pan and fluid for debris and signs of overheating.
If you are a medium to good home mechanic, a fluid and filter change is not difficult. You need lots(15qts or so?) of fluid and the filter/gasket kit. You also need a very large drain pan and kitty litter.
This can be a messy job, especially if you have never done it so it might be worthwhile to have the shop do it.
I think the manual on my 94 gas truck recommends 50K changes and 12K if you tow or see severe duty. If your tranny has never had it done, your fluid maybe pretty worn out or even burnt, that's bad.
