I have a 93 F-150 with a 5.0 Litre fuel injected engine. When I am driving, my temp gauge only comes up to the o in normal, a bit on the low side. I have heard that this can affect my fuel economy, should I be worried about anything else? Probably just a weak thermostat, how big a job is it to replace and do you recommend any brand of a thermostat?
Why do you say "a bit on the low side"? IIRC a lot of the listeres here say that thier temp guage runs around the N or the O. As long as the beast is blowing hot air when you call on it to do so and you don't have any evidentiary signs of a leaking or "closed" T-stat you are probably OK to leave it alone. HOWEVER, if you are really anxious to change out your T-stat then by all means have at 'er. It's not an arduous job although the bottom bolt on the housing can be a bit of a bugger. I don't use any RTV or other sealant on the new gasket and have never had one leak. Others will insist that you use a sealant on both sides of the gasket. YMMV. I would probably sugges that you stick with the FORD issue 195 deg. T-stat. The first one inmy truck ran for almost ten years before I changed it out. I have not had very good luck with jobber T-stats in my trucks, cars or motorbikes. Dont' forhget that you should probably also replace your rad cap and do a thoroug inspection of your upper and lower hoses as well as your heater hoses. You also may want to consider "refreshing" your existing A/F with a new 60/40 mix. Post back if you have any questions or problems.
