Winter Driving

I'm confused!!!! I drove a Ranger for years and in the winter I ALWAYS had to put a few hundred pounds over the rear wheels to move--yes I had good tires. My new 150 4.2 reg cab with the long bed is acting odd. In november I did not have any weight in the back, and the truck had no problems in the deep snow and ice. I came home two nights ago without weight (I did not know about the storm and take the weight out because the 400 lbs decreases my mpg) and cars were in the ditch at every cloverleaf along the freeway, but my 150 did not have any problems. When I got close to home, I even reved the engine to really see if it was icy, and yes I could spin the wheels, but the truck does not spin around like the ranger did????????? I thought all trucks were bad in the winter????

We get very little snow or ice here in Alabama, so I can't give any feedback on driving my truck in the stuff.
I've driven in a bunch of it over the years in various parts of the country, just not in my truck here in Alabama.

I don't know that any standard (not 4X4) vehicle is necessarily very adept in snow/ice.
I figure it's more a matter of driver and tires.
And sometimes luck! Sometimes it jjust doesn't matter how good you are, or how good your tires are, etc. If you hit ice in a bad way, the truck is pretty much going where momentum carries it.

Whatever the case, glad to hear you faired well, and your truck did good.

Maybe the extra weight of the bed, the bigger wheels and tires (im guessing the F-150 has bigger tires and maybe bigger wheels from the factory then the ranger did), the bigger rear end, bigger gas tank. That stuff may not add up to 400LBS but maybe its just enough....I dont know just some stuff I thought of.

I remember as a kid, my dad always putting weight, (septic tank cover) in the back of his ford trucks cause the truck would slide. Now he drives a 4 by 4. Yes, the size of the tires were a problem with the ranger, 235 70 15, in snow and ice a larger tire is not good, less pounds per inch. This new truck has 235 70 17s Hancook. THe brand is new to me, but they sure work well.

No limited slip rear end. A major problem with the ranger in the north is that the tires are to big on a small truck. My 96 E150 had the same size tire. When you use such a wide tire on snow/ice/gravel.....things slide easily. The truck also had a very tight suspension, in the summer Ihad to really slow down on dirt/gravel roads esp if they had bumps !!!!lol
