Question What do these figures mean?(winch question)

I got one of those small $50 winches from Harbor Freight because it said it would pull 6000lbs. rolling. I love the severe lack of info on the outside of the box. I am looking through the manual, and it says under pulling capacity.

1. Move a load from a dead stop of up to 2000lbs. on ground.

2. Maintain a movement of a wheeled vehicle of up to 6000lbs. on ground.

I interpret this as meaning

1. If I have a pallet with 2000lbs. of material on it, the winch can pull it.

2. I can pull 6000lbs. on wheels if it is already moving(sounds complicated).

I got this thing to help me get cars on my flatbed. I currently use a 5-ton come-a-long which can be time consuming. Is this thing gonna be up to the task? Is my interpretation correct, or am I way off?

depends on how big the vehicle is to be moved onto the trailer... those little winches work great on trailers and i've used one to load my 65 chevy II nova onto the trailer with no problems- it weighs about 2800 lbs... it has a little more dificulty loading my race truck- 72 4x4 f250 at about 4800 lbs- but it depends on how much slope and tire pressure too.. i just hook a small block onto the truck and get my 2 to 1 advantage and don't worry bout it.. jmo

No prob. It probably would have been OK in the other forum but thought you will get some more experienced users here.

it should be good, just drop a block in there if it bogs down.

wow! a 6K winch should be more than enough for a trailer! i'm looking at getting a 2K but if you only paid $50 for a 6K i'm going that route!

yea your assumptions are correct.... get a ****** block though and you can double the pulling capacity but you cut your line speed in half

NT offers some 12000lbs for like $500 and they have a two year warranty... sound good?
I mean, I figure I can break mine in two years and get it replaced... Two years, thats a long time to break something for me.

Edit: Now I cant find that winch. Cheapest I can find on NT is like $900 or something for hte 12,000lb.

yeah we have to use a warn m8000 winch in order to pull some of the trucks onto our trailer, and it takes the entire pulling power to pull my 80 up onto the trailer after a bog, granted i am pulling some extra weight and the trailer does sit a tad high. ( i also have to pul the truck up some railroad ties so the tires clear the fenders).

I need to get an 86 Shelby charger on it tomorrow. I mostly put cars on it, an occasional truck. I also have an 84 LTD wagon and a 89 sable wagon to get rid of. The ****** block sounds like a good Idea, can those usually be purchased at an offroad shop? Oh yeah for $10 extra I got a 2 year warranty on this winch as well. I guess if it dies from the workload, I 'll get it fixed or replaced and sell it to buy a better one.

> 1. Move a load from a dead stop of up to 2000lbs. on ground.

It better be rolling, I used one in the back of my pickup truck to winch logs into the bed of my F-100 and there is no way it will pull a dead flat weigh of 2,000 pounds. It was barely enough for a 1200 pound log that was rolling up a ramp.

I had one from northern tools, the same OEM makes all those $50-$100 6K winches that attach to the trailer ball plate. Does not matter if it says "master lock" or "uncle joes". The most frustrating thing is having to take the winch apart to undo a bird's nest that jams the winch. Don't shock load it like I did, it snaps the main shaft of cast metal in 1/2.

It worked pretty good today. I think it has some kind of overload protection on it, we almost had the car on the trailer when the winch stopped working, it would just make a click noise when I pushed the button. We waited a few minutes and it started working again. Of course, this was a small car, mid 80's shelby charger. I wonder how it will do with a full size car. The power cables were a big disappointment, barely 6' long. How am I supposed to put the winch on my hitch and connect it to the battery. We parked my friends car next to the trailer to run it. Looks like I will have to install some cables to get power to the back of the truck.
