93 explorer defrost inop

I bought a 93 explorer sport 4X4 about a week ago and everything works great. Well after I replaced the shocks and put new tires on it. The only problem is the heat works great but sliding the selector lever to defrost does nothing, it just keeps blowing out of the vents. Anyone know how to fix this?

Yeah - put the old shocks back on...right away!

Kidding - tires and shocks have nothing to do with the HVAC system. Since this is all cable controlled, I would look for something impedding the cable mechanism motion. Did you recently replace the stereo? Sinc eth sterso is right on top of the HVAC controls, maybe something got reinstalled incorrectly and is now in the way.

Nope, didn't replace the stereo. I knew the shocks and tires didn't do anything lol. I did however remove the glove box to move a battery for what the previous owner claims is the ford vehicle security system. I did notice a white plastic arm that moves a plunger of some sort inside of a cyliner. Since I thought this might have something to do with the controls I turned her on and moved the control lever from side to side. It looked like the arm tried to move the plunger.

I haven't lloked under my dash in a while - same car as you have - so I can't recall exactly what the heater control mechanism looks like -white, black, cylinders... I'd bet then since you were in there, something got knocked out of wack. I know the golve box itself tends to hit things when it swigs open/closed - the back end of it. Could be you just need to realign something to make sure movement is not impedded.

Thanks for the help Jharger, no luck though. I guess I may have to deal with it for a while. I just have to start the car and turn the heat on full and go back inside for now. It should be warming up soon though. Eh, oh well.

I figured out the problem tonight. I pulled out the heater control unit and found that there is a white arm that is connected to the function lever on one end and a cable on the other. Somehow it had managed to completely pop off. In the process of fixing that I broke a plastic bracket holding the cable to another piece of plastic. I attempted to tape it back together as I had nothing else around. I slid the function lever back and forth to make sure it worked and it did, the tape didn't hold so now its broke again. Any ideas? JB Weld Stick maybe?

No JB weld is for metal only. Actualy, crazy glue works pretty good for stuff like this. otherwise, back to junkyards or dealer to get ne w parts.
