will there be any majorsteps in converting my 84 to a 351w form a 302? i would specifically like to know about engine mounts, flywheel, and why headers for a 351 will fit my 4 gear but the ones for 302's can only be used w/ autos?
the swap is a drop in swap. you will need the proper flywheel for your 351w 28oz imbalance. all the accessory brackets from the 302 should bolt onto the 351w. of course the intake and distributor are different. not sure on the water pump but they could be the same. motor mounts are the same but look them over good. new ones are like 20 bucks and worth it if your stock ones are old.
as for the headers the 351w block is wider/taller then the 302 so with a manual the linkage may get in the way. are you running shorties or longtube headers?
I can't add much more than what is here, but I did it and it was simple, there is a difference on the alt/smog pump bracket, I had to use the one from my 83 Or it was all in my head.
I have bassani shorties and the y-pipe and I highly reccomend them, but to each his own.
Check my gallery under my rig.
longtubes are nice for torque gains but can have fit issues and they hang below the frame . i dont like that for an offroad rig that may see some hi center situations. shorties are nice, get the job done and fit well
its a 69 351 (oh yeah! big heads) that im rebuilding in auto tech. im gonna be using a carter carb on a HO intake (untill i can afford an aluminum one, im pinching pennys where i can, i actually did have a wiand but that was before i found out my 302 was trash) and a comp cam. the headers i was looking at are hooker competitions. they seem to be the only long tubes that i can find that fit a manual tranny (mine has a hydraulic clutch w/ external slave) anybody use a set of hookers? ( ) i will also need to fab up an exhaust, will both pipes need to go over to the passenger side to go back? i would like to use an x pipe, or a crossover at the least. engine mounts are still good and my old 302 is an 80' so it should be a 28 oz.
i use hooker comps on mine with an autotranny, i havent seen a goodway to run a pipe under the driver side yet. but would u realy want one that close to ur fuellines and pump? u could run true dual out right infront of the rear tire if u want it loud.
lol they end with 3" by 1.5 foot long glass packs on either side of the driveshaft. nuthin after the packs. interior noise isnt to excessive for the setup
a single exhaust setup will produce better torque then a dual setup. its cheaper and less stuff to get damaged when wheeling. if you need that dual look then just have a single in dual out muffler and have the pipes ran out behind each tire.
well, i got the engine into the shop and mostly tore down(crank, rods and pistons are the only things not pulled) and so far it looks really promising, the intake side of those old heads are noticably bigger than the E0's off my 302, and while the cylinders do have a fair ridge at the top, there are no big scratches or grooves or anything. im not gonna be here tomarrow so monday i will finish the teardown and mic everything out and let it sit in the vat for a couple of days before i send it off to the machinist. it really looks like i got a well cared for engine, i'll know for sure when i see the bearings. and mr burns, you are correct about more torque if i just ran a good sized single exhaust, and i will keep it in the back of my mind, but for some reason i still want duels(must be my age) and it isn't so much to be loud (except for maybe when all four barrels open) but i want it to be noticable, so you can hear the slight lope of the cam, but mostly looking for a good sound.
If the heads on the 351 are noticibly larger than the heads on the 302, you might have a 351C; 351W and 302 heads are dimensionaly the same, I believe.
what year motor did you get the 351w out of again? to clear 35's youll need 4"s on anything from 78-86. 6"s for 87+.
a single can sound just as good. i have a 50 series on mine with a choked up Y pipe an stock cats an it is great. anything more really and the dron going down the road would get old ya know. if you go duals take it to a good shop and expect to pay a good penny for quality work. also dont go bigger then 2.5" and make sure a crossover is put in (very important)

i only wish i had a 351c, it would already be in my capri...
the 351w (yes, it is a windsor) came out of a 69 or 70 galaxie 500 the block is stamped as a 69. it is one of the pre74's that has bigger intake ports and valves
