203 Degree T-Stat Question

Why did say Dieselsite offer this stat? Assuming it works better, why didn't Ford stick with it instead of going with a 195 T-stat? TIA

Did you read their little write-up on it? The 203 allows the engine to operate more efficiantly at slighty higher temp with no side effects with oil temps. i ordered one with a billet housing, water pump, belt tensioner and serpentine belt. Might as well do everything while I have the pump off for a r/r.

The old 7.3 did have a 203* t-stat. As some point (I think with the 7.3 upgrade in the '99 SD) Ford switched the water pump from an IH pump to a Ford pump. The old 203*t-stat didn't fit the new Ford pump, and the only T-stat that Ford had qualified and approved was a 195* t-stat. Ford didn't want to spend the $$$ to qualify a new t-stat, so it stayed with the 195* t-stat.

No, Ford wasn't being stupid. The 7.3 runs just fine with the 195* t-stat. It's just that the 7.3 might run just a tad more efficiently with the 203* t-stat.

Besides, it's a fun Saturday morning project. If your truck is more than 3-4 years old, you should probably change out the t-stat anyway.

I did. I was just curious why Ford would go with a T-stat that didn't let the engine run as efficiently when there was a better one.

Because there was a cheaper one.

All right. You people have forced me to change. Mon I will go to Ford and get the longer hose for the 2 alternator system, get the 203 T-stat and the billet housing. You people won't stop nagging till I get it done, will you? Fine. I give up and will buy it. That is my story to the wife and I am sticking to it.
