Of course that assumes the FCC pays attention to this. I am fairly certain they don't, unless their are complaints from the areas you drive through as you cause interference on radios, TV sets, intercom and PA systems, audio/video recording equipment and so on.
I've started another theread on the audio boards to get input from the fellas in that neck of the woods. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=461299.
Try and sell me on options/features-- what is a must have and what can one do without.
As well as what brands hold up well and such.
Also, know that I know little about this stuff, so when using technical terms i.e. "coax" and SRW, tell me what they mean. Because I have no clue
How many watts are 'average' in an antenna? I've seen from 600 to 1400 so far.
Thanks for all the info!

FCC could care less about fixed CB's. tens of THOUSANDS of truckers run them all over the country all the time. As well they really dont interfere with as much as you think. 30 years ago? yes they were a problem, but alot of the newer equipment that used to have problems work on a totally different level. These FCC regulation are a bit old, they *could* relax them a bit.
BTW if you want to get your CB fixed up, head to the local CB shop and slip the man a 50, he WILL hook you up, no aux equipment needed.
Antennas have no watts. Just what the radio or amp feeds them.
Most local CB shops don't know beans from applebutter. All they do is crank the radio to the max clip the ALC, then all you have is an over modulated piece of crap that splatters all over the band.
If you do a radio right and if you run an amp, (which you don't need for what you have stated) it will sound good on both ends. Without tearing up everyone else.

spidk43,
CB's can be pretty fun to have in the truck. I have one in my truck and yack on it sometimes with my friends. Just be sure to use good etiquete. I have a cobra 19x?? or something like that. I bought it on ebay for 40 bucks brand new and the thing i really like about it is the fact that it has weather channels on it, which are quite handy. For antennas i have two 3ft black whips mounted on either side of the toolbox. I havent ever measured the srw or anything like that just bought the stuff and hooked it up. Here a year and a half later i can still talk about 10 miles on fairly flat ground. I think the whole setup was like 65 bucks and like an hour to install myself.
If you want something fun, but a little illegal hook a PA speaker up under your hood and get a cb with a pa hookup, then you can drive up to people you know and start talking to them from right inside the truck lol. (no, i dont have one but one of my friends does).

Brian 460,
sorry i wasnt specific. I guess everyone will have to check local and state regualtions for the use of a PA system on a mobile vehicle. In the state of Illinois, they are quite illegal. Several of my friends have them in their vehicles and two of them have gotten pulled over for using them in a nearby town. (just for saying "hey, whats up?") lol. But we live out in the country and there are plenty of other opportunities to have fun with them.

as far as legality, I really dont think they are illegal as long as its used within proper hours (dont blair it after 10pm-ish, just like any household loudness)
I had a cop on foot stop me in downtown toronto when me and a buddy were egging onthese kids that were hollering at us in some nissan suv, we urged us not to use it anymore. I think he was just recommending we stop, but I really dont think he could give me any sort of ticket. Ohh yeah, I think you could possibly get some kind of ticket if you use profanity on the CB. But if you do you only make yourself look like an idiot. If I DO fool around on it, I keep a mind for any kids or parents etc..
Basically I only harass retard gangster teens etc

And I suggest useing a horn style PA speaker, works WAY better than a regular cone driver.
Actually come to think of it, I was pulled over a second time for using it at night for yelling out "hey whats up!" driving by some outdoor bar patio thing..
The cop said "I dont care if you use that CB, I cant give you a ticket, although if you wanna use it, be prepared for me to run your plates out of curiosity and noticing your tags are our of date by a month..." lol I got a fine for invalid stickers.

I just installed a Cobra 18 WX ST II, and it's as easy as finding a place to run the wires. I installed mine in the roof. I drilled the two holes through the roof, and ran the wires inside the trim to the fuse box. I ran the coax cable inside the trim to a rubber grommet behind the seat (regular cab) then up to the roof where I have my magnetic antenna. By the way, the inner roof is only about an inch and a half to two inches below the outer roof, so don't drill too far through. All in all, it makes for a clean, out of the way installation.

Assuming they were so inclined, son
