I remember having to take out my whole dash on my 78. There are just some nuts underneath that hold the pad on. These trucks are very simple there for the dashes are easy to remove. No stupid hidden clips or plastic retainers or anything. Just a couple of screws on each side and maybe a couple in the center. Its been a while since I've had mine out and my truck is hibernating right now so I can not be too sure.

Definatly have to take out the gage cluster and the glovebox. I had to take the radio center bracket out to (not totally, just loose). Use a 1/4 ratchet and I believe the nust are 5/16. There are 7 studs that you reach from the underneath. There is one more (the 8th) in the center of the dash pad. It's where the dash dips down near the radio area. If the truck has A/C ducts it will be a little more exciting, since the bezels are going to be in the way. Escpecially on the passenger side. You have to be a little ambidexterous have a little mirror and flashlight will help.
