I've been happy with the performance from my Superchips 1705 programmer/code reader. Three settings and it is simply a plug and play deal. No physically installing a chip. I set mine for performance-tow and pull upto 7000 lbs with it frequently. Really like the power. I'm sure other people will have other opinions about other chips. Nice to have a code reader also..
I've been using the Edge Evolution tuner (60/80/100hp) on the 80hp setting to tow everything from 4000# boats to 15000# 5'ers. Just have to watch the EGT's when I get to a hill. Seems to have more than enough power to pull normal freeway overpasses & maybe 3% grades in overdrive. In 3rd gear, it'll fly over most anything in the continental US, dropping to 2nd for only the most serious of grades.
i run his programs and they are sweet. im usually towing my horse trailer 15k 4 days a week, and running the equipment trailer around with the cat 287 in it runnin about 17k
I'm real happy with my ATS (Advance Turbo Systems, I believe) 6-position chip. I got it through Bean's Diesel Performance. Settings are:
+50 hp
+75 hp
+100 hp
+125 hp
Fast idle
stock
I like the selectable engine tune characteristics, and they can be changed on the fly. For expample, the +50 hp setting provides lots of low-end torque for towing. The +75 hp and +100 hp settings seem to move the torque band to higher RPMs for more economical highway cruising. Getting into +125 hp setting doesn't offer much in terms of practical driveability (my opinion), but will provide butt-puckering acceleration and lots of smoke. The fast idle is handy for warming up or running AC while parked. The stock setting is a waste of a chip position because I haven't used it since I installed the chip. The other settings are way more fun than stock.
