I bought a 96 crew cab a few months ago and have been tuning up the little things as I go along. Serpentine belt has a steady squeal to it. Replaced belt and now its a chirp, chirp, chirp. Sounds like at the power steering pump. If I squirt a little belt dressing on the grooves, its fine for about 5 mins. Belt is very tight, and all accessories seem to be working fine. Squeal does not increase when I turn the wheels, only when I increase throttle. What the hell is causing this? Mis-aligned vacuum pump maybe? Thanks.
my truck is doint the same right now. i just replaced the alternator the other day and belt and idler bearings. mine is squeaky also. i figure its just gonna do it until it wears a little. if not i will put my old one on and carry the new as a spare.
Tensioner spring is definately not weak. In order to put the new belt on, I needed a 2' piece of pipe on the ratchet. I'm used to working on things, its what I do for a living..... but I've actually never met a tensioner that is that stiff before. Thought I might add though, if I squirt chain & cable lube on the belt, it shuts up for more than an hour.
Check out the article on the HOME PAGE under LATEST ARTICLES: Eliminating Serpentine Belt Noise. Good article, I was told about this several years ago by a local machanic and have done sevaral cars and trucks since. Works good.
During my recent alternator replacement recently I replaced the serpentine belt. My choices were: the cheap one or a goodyear gatorback. They were out of the cheap one. Sigh. So I got the better belt which I noticed claimed to be quieter! I had to laugh because the PSD is sooo loud that what difference could a belt make?!
Oh yeah, advice... Make sure all the belt is riding on all of the pullies correctly and drive on. Keep your old belt handy!
