I just finished my first tank with this new to me truck.
02 F250 Regular Cab Auto 2WD 3.73 with tall ARE metal shell 110,000 miles.
I got 12 MPG as I said up top, and that is ONLY around town, no highway miles, and playing in it just a bit, its new to me, you know, gotta feel it out.
So today I HAD to go have my dual exhaust put on it, you understand, for mileage. I am positive it will get better mileage, well, unless I like to hear the new pipes. Oh, got a magnaflow with twin outs and 3.5 chrome tips. The local guy did for $285 and it looks good.
Doesnt sound THAT far off depending how your driveing it. I've heard several times (even from the guys working in the dealer garage) the V8 will get you a consistent 1mpg better than the V10... What a trade off!
The good news is that there's a TON of aftermarket goodies for the V8 to make it go faster. Better mileage... You can spend A LOT of cash on black magic goodies and maybe given the right combination get 1-2 mpg better. I CAN tell you that topper is costing you 1mpg on the highway! I know that from experience.
Yep, I have the 5.4, I did leave the cat and the o2 sensors in place. It sounds good! I had been told that the stock muffler was very restrictive, so that was my excuse to put duals on it, its suppose to be a low restriction muffler. The shell does stand about 5 inches over the cab so I am sure that will hurt me somewhat. I would like to be able to get 15 on the interstate, if I can keep it at a decent speed, but ya'll know how that goes! I plan on putting an FIPK on it, getting my tire pressure right, and removing the ladder rack too, to see if it helps any.
I had that same topper on a 99 Chevy. Went from high 17's to low 16's as soon as I had the topper put on. I personally think the exhaust WILL help you out a little bit. Everytime I've put a louder exhaust on a truck my mileage stayed the same. BUT, after putting the exhaust on I constantly caught myself getting into the throttle harder because I liked the sound!!!
WHAT CAN YA DO!?!
Good tire pressure, lower speeds, and leaving the stop lights a little easier are your best bets.
the ladders, metal cap above the roof line is why..the exhaust will help 1mpg on my 350 lifted. What kinda work do you do is there alot of wight in the back? the 2wd should get better miles than that
I will be taking the damaged ladder rack off as soon as my shoulder heals from surgery this past Monday. I basically use the truck as a daily driver, this is just how it was set up when I got it. I may keep the shell on, I do some lawn maintanance in the spring and summer for extra cash and it will be nice to be able to leave all my equipment on the truck locked up. Next week I plan on make a somewhat long run, 250 round trip and Ill check my mileage then.
Actually, it feels like it has more power throughout the RPM range. I havent gotten it much over 70mph yet, but like starting off fast! Thinking about it, between the 2nd-3rd gear change, it does seems to drop off power a bit, but Im not sure, havent been able to play with it too much. Sounds good, seems to rev a bit faster, but I know that all my be just the excitement of actually being able to hear the thing now. I think im gonna try to make my own version of something like the FIPK kit from K&N. My thinking is that the metal pipe will conduct more heat than say, will a piece of PVC pipe. Any suggestions on that?
I opened the stock filter box up with a dremmel, then put the K&N filter in. I basically cut 3/4 of the round box out, leaving enough frame for the filter mount. With the hood open, from the firewall to the bottom by the radiator has been cut open. Sounds great, but has done nothing for me in terms of better gas mileage. Another member stated that the K&N might make fuel ecomomy worse on the 5.4 (read my post "ridiculous), because you have increased air flow triggering the ECM to think it needs more fuel. I am on a mission to try different things, including air pressure, gas stations, and OD on or off all the time. Actually got better gas mileage on the highway with the OD off, but I hate the feeling of running at 70MPH @ 3000 rpms. My thinking is the air flow and engine rpms are at their optimal, hence the better MPG. What tires and air pressure are you running?
Right now my truck has 235/85/16 Goodyear Conquest AP's, Load E 10 ply running at 80 PSI. The tires will need to be replaced in the next couple of months, just havent decided what I will go with yet. I was thinking about doing what you did with the air box, but now I am not sure. This thing has enough power for what I use the truck for, I just want to improve the gas mileage. I havent had it long enough to play with different tire pressures, playing with the OD, speed, etc., only had the truck for two weeks and had a shoulder surgery about 3 days after I got it. But Ill let ya know what I do and how it turns out.
