jump starting weirdness

Last night I was jump starting my 74 with my 79. When I turned the key to start it, it pulled my 79 down enough to kill it almost instantly. then the battery in the 79 was dead. I got the 79 running but it wasn't charging. I put a battery charger on it and it wouldn't take a charge. I pulled the cables off to change the battery and just a thought, put the charger on the battery with nothing connected. It started to charge about 8 amps. I hooked everything back up and it works fine. Any ideas about what just happened or was I in a Twilight Zone moment?

P.S. I got the 74 running also.
Dave,

Hi Dave, it seems like the battery connections wee dirty, and when you re-connected things were ok. when you were jump starting the 74, you were jumping it with the alternator on the 79. that explains why the 79 went "south". be sure your connections are good and clean and I think you will be ok.
