P-brake....engine idles high??? Problem!

Ive noticed that sometimes when the P-brake is on the light on the dash lights up and after a few minutes after starting it, the idle goes up to about 1300-1500 untill i hit the gas/brake/clutch. Is this normal???....some cold startup thing???

The problem is that i use the p-brake all the time....but the light on the dash only comes on once and a great while, what would cause this?

This is the normal operation for a manual tranny. On manuals, the pbrake has to be set for the PCM to up the idle on cold starts. You should start hearing the EBPV closing and a higher pitched sound comming from the exhaust a few minutes after starting also. Part of the warmup sequence.

The intermittant light sound like a loose or damaged component on your dash (loose bulb?) because if your parking brake switch was not working, the PCM would not kick the idle up (thinking the pbrake was not set). Auto trannys don't care about the pbrake.

the Pbrake switch is notorious for being bad, Mine comes on once in a great while as well, maybe 1 out of 50 times I set the P brake. Which isn't all that often since I have an auto. The RPMs still seem higher than normal though to me, mine idles up to 900-1200 depending on how cold it is and such.

Ah ha! that why mine does that too, sometime the light turns on when it wants to and I know its the stupid little plastic pos switch down on the pedal. I was wondering why the damn thing only kicks up to high idle sometimes and not others. I guess it makes sense though now!

When the light doesnt come on, get down and look up where the p brake is and you will see a ball bearing looking thing that is spring loaded. just touch it or push it in and Ill betch that light will come on. Ive got to the point now when mine doesnt come on, i just reach under there and touch that thingie and wholla, the light comes on. When you puch the p brake with your foot, that lil ball thing is supposed to pop out just a little, its a contact.
