Getting a Superchips… so Do I Need a Pyrometer?

I have a 2000 F250 7.3 that hauls a 3200 lb Lance cabover camper. I’ve decided to purchase a Superchips Microtuner to boost power and mileage. My mechanic says I don’t need a pyrometer to measure EGT if I run the Superchips at the second hp level… because I’m only hauling 3200 lbs.

Are there good reasons to get a pyrometer?

The second issue is cost. My mechanic said he can sell me a pyrometer and boost gauge that mounts to my windshield pedestal for only $470. That’s a bit steep for my budget.

Can’t I just get a pyrometer and mount it to the bottom of my dash? Does anyone have a lead on where I can get an affordable pyrometer? And where can I economically mount it in my truck?

Any experience for feedback will be greatly appreciated!

A pyrometer and boost guage are never a bad idea, especially with any power upgrades. I would suggest checking out www.bankspower.com . They're pretty reasonably priced. I have the pyrometer and boost mounted on my A-pillar, as well. Very easy to read.

Your mechanic is on crack.

If you do not tow with it and only run on the lowest setting you may not neccessarily need a pyro, but anything above that that and you are playing russian roulette with a $10K engine.

$470!!! that is WAY TOO MUCH! you can get a 4 pod a-pillar set prewired for less than that!! a two pod pillar mount and two gauges will probably run you $250-$300 depending on the style you want.

visit www.blackclouddieselperformance.com , check into their gauges, and even buy a superchips Microtuner from him. great guy to deal with, give him a call.

As was said above, get the pyrometer for sure when increasing power and you can get a good deal at some sponsors sites for combos such as tuner and guages or tuner, guages, and 4" exhaust if you havn't already opened up the exhaust and intake.

Not to say that banks products are bad, but you're paying a lot of money to buy a Banks product. Most of what you're paying for there is the name. Banks doesn't actually make the guages, they just put they're name of the face. You can get just as good (or better) guages when you go with a company that just makes guages. Autometer, Isspro, Dipricol, etc... That's my opinion anyhow. And I've had the Banks guages -- been replaced with Autometer.

I bought my Isspro guages from Motorhaven - the host of FTE. Show your direct support for this forum and get a great price as well. Plus they have the best dial on the market. You can tell at a glance if the EGT is getting too high.

I personally prefer the autometer guages just because of the different face styles that are available. I went with the ultralight series because of the silver border and face. Went with the color of my truck. Just thought I'd chime in.
