98' explorer with the 6 cylinder engine--(not sure if it's the ohc or cam in block engine design) it's my buddies and ford said 5800 for new engine...the whole engines loose...whatever....all i want to know is how much of a job is it to take an engine out of this vehicle..OR--if it is a simple rod knock--can it be fixed with the engine in the vehicle or does it have to come out to fix it? any help is thanked
Have you determined for a fact that it's a rod bearing knock? Gotta realize that many of the late 90's 4.0's experience a slight tap/knock noise which is attributed to tolerance accumulation on the wrist pins. Ford has issued a TSB on this matter and regards it as normal. From what I've seen it does not impact longevity or reliability.
just had my daughters 99 in the shop for the same thing .thought it was also rod knock but was told itwas a characteristic of that engine and year models, claimed it did not affect life of engine. said it only did it under about 2000rpm
thats what i thought... it bugs the crap outta me! but im not sure we're talking about what im hearing, whenever the truck is running, i hear a knocking-like noise coming from right around the right front wheel well, the noise is louder when the truck is cold, after it warms up it quites down a bit, but is still noticable. any ideas of what this could be and how much it would cost to fix this?
possible not! ours doesnt do it when its cold .and does not seem to do it after you get above 2000rpm,basically you only hear ours when your at an idle and the engine is warm.
its a little harder to hear then it is cold, because the alternator makes a grinding like noise when its cold, but like i said, you can still hear it, i hate it... we baught it on Oct. 22nd 05 from Carson City Toyota, it was so quite hten.. now it sounds like a friggin lear jet goin to the highway... cant figure out how to shut the dang thing up!but if i knew what the noise..or all the noises for that matter were.. i could fix it.. so.. hear is a list of noises i am hearing.
knocking-like noise in fron wheel well (all the time)
sounding like the motor is shot ( I know for a fact that it isnt)
and the friggin Alt. making a grinding like noise
its not loud or anything, but would like to get it fixed, any ideas? It'd really help me out alot, Thanks
