I have a 1998 F-150 with the 5.4L with 166,000 on it. when the engine first starts it sounds like a loud tick from a lifter on the right side. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if this could be something other than a lifter.
Does it go away after the engine warms up?
If so, its most likely piston slap.
My '99 F-150 does the same thing. Ive been told that while the noise is an annoyance, there is no reason to worry about the engine failing due to this.
its reading about 3/4 up on the guage. i havent put a manual guage on it yet. The noise goes away once the engine is warm, but often varies when the engine is first started. i was figuring that it was a valve train noise because its coming from so high up in the engine, not really like a crankcase noise.
Valve train is the last to get oil. neglected oil changes or incorrect weight oil may result in these symptoms. Clogged oil ports or returns can starve engine parts of oil.
Anyone think an engine flush would help?
I religiously change my oil at 2500 miles and always use the appropriate oil weight. I am a mechanic myself, just wasnt sure if anyone has had this problem, and if so, what the correction was
People get fooled often on these trucks by noises that sound like a lifter.
A pretty common problem is broken studs that attach the manifold to the cylinder head. An exhaust leak there can sound almost exactly like a bad lifter.
My 98 F-150 sounds like a diesel when it first starts, especially in cold weather. Mine has 117K miles on it, but has been doing it for some time. Once it warms up a little, the noise leaves. My dealer says not to worry about it. One thing I do now is only use Motorcraft oil filters. These filters have an anti drainback valve in them, and others like Fram don't. This keeps oil up in the overhead cam area of the engine for lubrication when you first start. I wish I would have only used Motorcraft filters on my truck. I have always run Mobil 1 since new.
