My buddy has a 97 Ford F-150 with the 4.6 in it. When you take off some times it feels like it jerks you a little bit and makes little noise what could this be? It almost sounds like the rear brakes are holding after you let off of the brakes.
Maybe the rear brakes are sticking on one side or both...since that is what it feels like, that is what I would check first. Check the motor and transmission mounts. Check the differential for slop in the ring and pinion. Check the pinion bearing. Check the universal joints. I can keep going but those are the items I would go for first...
Could be any of the above but I'd add. I had a weird clunk in my 86 Dodge, when starting or stopping. Took a while but found it was the springs were rusty/crusty and not moving smoothly. They were sticking and not responding until an aggresive stop/start. Just a thought.
when I first got my 97 I had the same problem I took it back to the dealer (it was used but had warranty) They added friction modifier fluid to the rear end and the problem stopped. They did however tell me that this was a maintenance item and charged me 80 bucks. The truck had about 20000 miles at the time and now is over 55,000 with no further problem.
