well i told you guys a few weeks ago that i checked my valve stem to guide clearance on my D2TE's and it came out with .003 slop which is past tolerance. Doesn't sound too bad at first huh except the fact that this measurment came from a set of heads that only had 5,000 miles on them since i had them rebuilt!! anyways i gotta estimate from a well known head company called Dover heads here in Atl, ga and they'll give me a rebuilt D2TE for $138 a piece with trade in and thats ready to run. Ok, my question is what valve springs do i need ot buy to go with my crane 941? I got part# 270-13309-1 out of jegs but i wanted to make sure these are the right ones even though they are the only ones they offer. as for my machinist, either he made an honest mistake and put the wrong seats in or something i'm not sure but this is the 10th motor i've had him do machine work too and he's always come out flawless...thats why started going to him b/c of previous prob's with another guy. anyways tell me whatcha think. thanks
Go back explain the issue to the mechanic and ask him to stand by his name..if he's worth sticking with he'll make it right...if he's a piece he'll have 1 person with something bad to say about him to others in town...not in his best interest..but hey do what makes you feel best
ya my dad said he'll stand by his work by previous experience my dad had with a repaired cracked head he fixed. I was just looking into Dover heads to see if they had a rebuilt port/polished set of heads i could get. my machinist should do the work for free i would think...not my fault...i just run the motor!
.003 is a lot of wear. i have a set with about 100,00 on them and they still spec .0016 thats according to the machine shop. can you give me the website for the head company? thanks
well i rebuilt the motor after 142,000 original miles so i'm not sure what exactly he did but we've sent a 390,351w, I-6 200, 3.8ltr, and several other engines to him that have come out perfect. I guess he just didn't replace the seats when he went through them. sound possible? i don't even know what the seats look like exaclty.
if you don't know what they look like, how do you know they are sunk? The valve stem to guide clearance is not related to valve seat depth. A lot of slop in the stem to guide clearance can cause poor sealing, but sunken valves is from too many valve jobs, or crappy ones that sink the seats into the bowl too much.
i know b/c my dad took the heads to my machinist after we found that it was out .003 and he looked at them and said "your valves have sunk into the heads"
ok talked to the machinist, he's ordered new seats but said that my premature failure was possibly due to improper valve lash. me and my dad went exactly by the Ford manual just like he built his 390 in his fastback that caem out great. I don't think thats what did it. I think he didn't replace the seats like he should have when he rebuilt the heads...thats just me. In any case he's gonna rebuild them again with new seats and put in the high strength springs for the 941 and then we'll be that much closer...
