I am about to start on my '53. As I'll be doing this in my garage, I don't have a lot of room. The truck has been sitting for a long time and has alot of surface rust. Fortunately there are no real bad areas. I will be taking it down to the frame. As I take it apart, I want to prevent the rust from advancing. I'm thinking of hitting it with a sander to smooth it out, then applying a coat or 2 of Ospho (if I can find the stuff around here) or an equivalent. I would then store the parts outside until I am ready to put it back together when I would do the sanding, priming, etc. Would that work? Would I need to prime after the Ospho application? Are there any other recomendations?
I have been using something I got at Advance Auto Parts called Right Stuff. It costs about 4-5 per qt. It looks a little like green koolaid. I don't know of the long term ability of it to last but for a short term fix it is great in my experience. I hit all the little surface rusts spots and the bottom inside of the doors etc and I was amazed at the change. The next morning everthing was black instead of rust color. Some of the spots looked good enough to prime and paint without further work. Check it out at least it is cheaper and it seems in my case to work.
Green substance that turns rust into a black primer is "Ospho". Ace Hardware has it too, also in quart containers. The "Right Stuff" is actually "Ospho" repackaged.
it is good stuff. My crewcab took a bath in the stuff last summer.
I have used both products and have had great results with both. The Right Stuff is alot cheaper to buy. The nice thing is it goes on like water so a little goes a long way. That one quart will cover a large area. The product is supposed to act like a primer so you don't have to cover it with one, but you can if you want to.
I haven't painted over it yet but I filled up the doors till it ran out. It would sure be nice it that took care of any future rust problems. I think I will repeat the process every few months for a while. It sure can't hurt. It does turn my driveway white where it hits for a few weeks.
