1) no "wait to start" light what should I be looking for? It cranks over for too long before starting and I think that the glow plugs aren't doing there thing... what should I be looking for?
2) tachometer doesn't work...
3)"Water in fuel "light on.....
4) no the stinger which may, but probably doesn't have anything to do with the engine..... When I put it in OD on the column it starts out in OD... but I can shift up through the gears starting in first and it will shift up fine.... I think that the tranny shifts great, but only in manual.... any ideas... modulator?? servos?? the OD OFF light stays on no matter what as well....
5) this seems kinda dogged too..... no *****... are these just dogs or maybe not getting enough fuel??? I bought the truck at an auction and it blows no smoke at all... The engine has a fresh coat of paint on it so I suspect that it may have been gone through recently...
any ideas of what I should be looking at????...
and... I am also looking for some lumber for the flat bed... anybody know where I can find some??? Thanks alot everyone... glad to be here....
Cheers,
Jeff
The tach not working will start the auto trans in LIMP MODE........second and reverse only.
The dead tach sender should/would send the automatic trans into a "failure management mode" (limp mode) with harsh engagements and firm shift feel, and an abnormal shift schedule. It has no effect on a manual trans only the Tach readings.
Replace the tach sender on the oil fill housing a big 1" nut with 2 wires. Ford only part Engine RPM sensor E5TZ-17B384-A about $50. You can remove and clean it but usually changed later too. You can test it too, hold it in the air away from ferrous metal, using an ohm meter lead on each wire you need DC resistance between 2000-3000 ohms.
Water in fuel drain the filter...........or check for a grounded wire on the filter base.
Ensure the speedo is workin correctly too.........Limp Mode again. DO NOT run this truck too far or you WILL burn up the trans if not fixed $$$$$$$$.
Thanks again!

1, No WTS - Most likely a glowplug problem given the starting problems you are having. Pull off the glow plug connectors and check each plug with a 12 Volt Test light that is connected to the battery by touching the connector side of the plugs. The test light will shine bright for good plugs and usually not at all or dim for bad plugs. If you have a bad plug, replace all plugs with new Beru/Motorcraft plugs.
2, No Tach -- That actually might be the source of a lot of your later troubles you mention with no power and the tranny. The E4OD tranny in your truck uses a signal from the tach sensor located next to the engine oil filler cap. Historically the Tach Sensor on these truck fails and it throws the tranny out of whack.
3, Water in Fuel -- That is bad news and you need to correct it immediately by replacing the fuel/water separator filter located on the big bracket behind the altinator. The water sensors in the fuel filter bowl have picked up water. If the water gets into the Injection Pump (IP) it could do major damage.
4, OD light. Get a your computer codes read by a qualified tranny shop after you change the engine tach sending unit and re-set the tranny computer by removing and replacing the battery cables. Keep them disconnected for atleast 5 minutes to ensure the tranny computer re-sets itself. There is a good chance that everything will be well although the tranny computer also relies on a whack of other sensors which also sometimes are causing problems. How is your speedometer working?
5, No Power -- Again the way you described your tranny is shifting it sound like it is operating in "Limp" mode where the computer is not controling because it is not getting the right information (i.e. no tach signal for starters) Two suggestions: 1, Change the Engine Tach Sending Unit (see 4 above), 2, If the tranny still does not shift right then have your codes read by a tranny shop to figure out what is going on.
I had to deal with all the above and more on my 91 F350 I bought three month ago and now it is almost running perrrrfect.

If you don't have any power, check your fuses. It makes sense for the tranny to operate in limp mode if the computer is down.
