I have a 94 e-350 w/7.3. The wait to start lamp only stays on for about 2-3 seconds. I checked all the glow plugs & they are all right. I also checked the glow plug module & replaced it. The light still only stays on for 2-3 sec. The truck is hard to start. I have to jump truck & even then it takes very long to get started.
On my old truck I had to replace the temp sender that tells the glow plugs that the engine is not warmed up. There are two temp senders. One for the temp gauge and one that signals the glow plugs to turn on or not to turn on. One's bigger than the other. One's on the head and one's in the cooling jacket by the water pump. You can see them both in front, more toward the driver's side of the engine. I can't remember which is which but someone will tell us.
I put all new glow plugs in. They are motorcraft plugs. I also changed the controller. The wts lamp still only stays on for 2-3 sec.The wire harness was tested using an ohmmeter. The harness all tests good w/ very little resistance.
Were talking a 94 right, it has the Solid state GP controller. Where did you connect the ground wire and is it tight. Dave S has a nice pic of the controllerand where the wires go.....
Yes that is the controller. I put the grond wire back where it came from. On the back intake stud. I cleaned the paint off & everything is still working the same.
There is a connector that was white in color where the engine harness plugs into the chassis harness. This connector is located near the oil dip stick and has about 10 wires total in it. Unplug the connector and check for corrosion on the two big yellow wires in the connector. Also inspect for signs of melting around the big wires. They are the battery power to the glow plug relay wires, a bad connection there would change the voltage to the relay which would affect the glow plug timing cycle.
Dave you were right. There is no sending unit on the 94. The problem was someone put cheap glow plugs in the engine. Swapped w/ Ford plugs & everything is fine. They had put champion plugs in.
