I asked this in the 4X4 forum, but no one there seemed to know the answer. My question is whether or not the control-trac 4X4 system has the ability to do lateral power transfers. I know it can do different rations front/back, but can it change left/right so if the right the left side can pull it out? My feeling is no, because it has open diffs, but I know it comes in an AWD version which I believe can do lateral power transfers. It is a 2003 Explorer 4X4. Thanks for you help
I'm not aware of any mechanism that choses right or left rotation. Limited slip and locked diffs turn both sides. Open diffs give more power to the one that's spinning. Control trac is a form of AWD. And, as you mention, distributes power front and back.
That's what I though since the thing has open diff's. I just wasn't sure if maybe the system could apply the brakes to wheels that are slipping therefore giving the opposite wheel the chance of spinning? I know that Mercedes does this, and maybe Volvo and others; just wasn't sure about the control trac being able to do this.
The brake thing works pretty well, at least in the mercedes I drove in the snow- doesn't really transfer power, but will prevent the wheels from slipping. My concern with this is the heat generated- not an issue in snow, but off road it could be a problem. All of you confirmed my suspicions- that it does not have lateral transfer, so if the right side is stuck, you're pretty much stuck. Thank you all for your time.
