frame rivets

Im currently rebuilding my 75 F-250 I need to replace the front frame support ,, the piece that sits right under the bumber,I was curious if there was any way of installing new rivets where the factory ones were ,, I dont want to have to weld it on ,, and I dont really want to bolt it on ,, I want it to look factory. I have a whole front fame section from a 76 with everthing I need ,, but i dont want to start cutting the new piece apart till I figure out what im going to do ,, is there a machine out there that you can replace the factory frame rivets????

I asked several welding shops and none of them wanted to do it, they all said that they could weld it but not rivet.

I think the rivets are heated then pounded into place when red hot. The rivets were used because it doesn't make the steel brittle and it's less likely to crack and has more flex. Ford used rivets for a reason, and the welding shops just don't seem to care that the welding will not last nearly as long.

I'd check into getting the rivets and having them installed.

Welders like to weld, not rivet. You're right, welding the part without anealing will leave the bond brittle. You're much better using a fastener. Try some machine shops (aviation if you find one). There's a sheer strength engineered into joint. This detemines rivot type or bolt grade.

We use rivets all the time in our shop (airframe repair). There are many different kinds and ours go on every part of helicopters and airplanes. We do it in our shop without any special tools and no heating required, I would imagine you could get yourself a handful and line up the peice and rivet it on. Rivets aren't very expensive. The ones we use are about 10 for a penny.
Good Luck

Can you imagine how much force it would take to smash a rivet as large as those on a truck frame? They hit it so hard, the shank actually swells and wedges itself in the hole. You will find this out when you try to grind the head off and drive it out.

i would just use grade 8 bolts that are the same size as the hole or even drill the holes out so they fit perfectly, so there is no slop as over time this would egg the holes out, i seriously doubt you are going to find a way to rivet it, i think they must use like a hand held forging hammer to rivvet these together cuz as franklin said the metal even expands in the hole, and they havent used red hot rivets in 80 years, unless you go to an old time blacksmith shop

I have already taken my old one apart, so I know how much of a pain they are , but I dont want to take the replacement one apart till I figure out what to do. I know that red hot rivets havent been used for decades,,,,but my truck is a 75 and they still use them nowadays,,,, so I would imagine there has to be some sort of machine used by frame shops that could reinstall the factory rivets???? any clues!!!!!!

anyone?

In building construction, they quit using rivits in the 60's as it was found that nuts and bolts are much stronger. Just get grade 8 bolts & lock nuts, and it should be better than new. I'm sure you wont find any frame shops that can do it for you, since it was done at the factory as a cost savings, not because it was stronger. If you have the engine and trans out, you might want to replace the rivits in the cross member under the trans. If you ever have to replace/repair your trans, you'll be happy you did.
