Pyro Install
I'm thinking about installing some gauges (yes I know should have done it a long time ago). My truck has 60K on it and I'm worried about drilling the exhaust manifold / pipe and getting a chip in the turbo. How have others done the drilling?

I just finished tapping and installing my pyro last night using dieselmanor's directions. Very easy! After, I ran a magnet around the tapped hole, and also on the drill bit when pulling it out. This removed all of the shavings.

i did the exhaust manifold type pyro about a month ago and was easier then i thought, i also followed the dieselmanor directions and used a shopvac to get what ever shavings were in there. most of the shavings get all over your face rather then inside of the exhaust if u do the steps with the smaller drill bits.

It's surprising how soft the cast iron manifold is. Very easy to drill and tap.
TIP: when you drill the hole, use a smaller drill first to drill a pilot hole. When you drill the hole out for the tap, it's much easier.

I put mine in on sunday following diesel manor's directions. It was very easy and took all of ten minutes under the truck. Just be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses because the shavings are hot.

Like Kwik says, go from a smaller bit to a larger bit and a lot of the shavings will fall right out. They are hot too. I didn't even run a magnet by the hole and all is well. I was nervous as well, but it is easy.

Don't even worry about the shavings. They will be gone and out the exhaust before you know it. I've been reading forums for five years and not one single issue with shavings. Rest assured. People have even passed broken off thermocouple probes without additional incident!

i drilled and tapped the hole with the truck running... the pressure in the manifold blew all the chips out of the hole as they were made... the engine only uses a very small amount of fuel at idle, so there were no noticable fumes... the tap only got hot to handle right at the end of the job and i took my time doing it... i installed the probe in the newly threaded hole and hooked it up... no problems...
