i have a 78 bronco with a 429, edelbrock induction, and a mallory distributor....it is a unilite 47 series with the LED and vacuum advance....however, there is no ignition control...just a resistor mounted on the fenderwell...the problem is that when i go to start it after it has been raining, it won't start...i dry everything out even though there is no visible moisture, but this still doesn't help....last time, after about 30 min. it started firing a little, and my tach was bouncing backwards really far....then it finally started after a few minutes of doing that.....?????? also, sometimes it misses when it's raining and i have it in gear at an idle....it goes away if i either drive or put it in neutral...it helped for the most part to bring the idle up to about 700-750 in gear...then again sometimes i drive it and it will idle at 700...other times, maybe 850...just whatever it feels like idling at......
WOW...sorry this is soooo long!!!!!!
I had this problem on time and when I pulled the coil wire off it was full of green corrosion. I replaced the coil and the problem went away. But, if your ignition is getting wet, I don't know what you will be able to do except coat all the connections with silicon grease and spray all the wires with silicon. Did you modify the wheel wells and the wheels throw water up in the engine compartment? I would look at where the water is coming from and fix that too.
You probably checked this one already....I had a similiar hard start problem with my 300-6. After thoroughly cleaning the grime off the distributer cap I discovered a crack. Apparently that or normal wear and tear was causing moisture buildup/condensation in my distributer. A new cap fixed the problem.
i haven't found moisture anywhere yet....it does it even if it is parked from a dry day to a rainy one before i try to start it...i haven't noticed any cracks on my cap, but it looks like it may be worn....i guess i can try that...also...any info on the ignition system i mentioned...with no control, just a resistor????
The Unilite has a module in the distributor. I havn't had very good luch with them. You could have a weak module, bad coil or wire, or resistor. You should have around 8 volts on the resister side of the coil when running.
