I hated that Holmgren said the things he said in front of his home crowd yesterday. I've always regarded him as a great coach, but those comments weren't indicative of greatness. Let the media and the fans, and even the ESPN analysts bash the refereeing of the Superbowl. The coach should never do it. I don't feel that it sets a very good example. I woiuld have respected him a lot more for saying that the Steelers were a great opponent and just played a little better at the critical times than we did (or something to that effect), than, "I didn't think we were going to be playing the guys in the stripes..." or something like that. Just my 2 cents.
Stu
He obviously is against being part of the PC group.
It would be very frustrating for a coach in the biggest game of the year to not only try and beat his opponent, but to be up against the officials as well.
I agree with his comments. That game was very poorly officiated no matter how you look at it. I think this offseason should be a very good time to get something done about the officiating. All this post season was poor.
I understand what everyone is saying about the refs, but it's not like this is new stuff here. I remember when the Raiders played the Patriots in the playoffs a couple of years ago. All I heard was that the refs made bad calls that cost the Raiders the Superbowl, "was it a forward pass or a fumble?".
The refs do not have an agenda here people, they probably get just as nervous working the biggest game of the year as anyone and they go "by the book" so they can look important and justify keeping them around. My supervisor does the same thing when the district manager comes to town. He climbs all over everyone for petty crap when the heat is on even though he would normally let it slide the rest of the month.
All I'm saying is that bad calls are not a new thing and people need to realize that it happens, oh well. The players will still get paid VERY WELL for playing a game and life will go on.
And if anyone wonders if I like the Steelers and that's why I'm defending the refs, the answer is NO, I'm a Lions fan so that in itself has taught me a little patience.
The idea behind this thread is not that the ref's were sub par- that is evident. I was taken aback by Mike Holmgren's comments, not the accuracy of them. I just felt that he should have left the grandstanding to the players and the critics of the game. I feel that he is more classy than to let his frustration show in that manner.
I totally agree, Mike Holmgren should just be quiet and let this die. His comments will just keep it going for weeks to come. The fans are already trying show bad officiating decided the outcome, but as you said in another thread, the refs decide the outcome in EVERY game, it's how you come back from the bad calls that makes you worthy of winning. I just think that coaches and players whine way too much and if they don't get what they want, then cry to the public about how you were cheated. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for sports and the mentality of sportstars.
Being a life long Cowboys fan (since they played at the Cottonbowl) I have never been a Pittsburg fan in any way.
Fact of the matter is. Seattle was out coached. Bad calls or no.
I agree that he was outcoached, I am a colts fan as they were outcoached also against the steelers. (Peyton needs a tighter leash) The games are never decided on officiating, The officials can only call the game as they see it. If Seattle would have scored the same 30 points plus like they did all season, then it wouldn't be an issue. Both teams look rusty and inefficient anyway. Holmgren was fined earlier this year for the same comments against officials after a game they lost. I for one am not a fan of either team, but picked the steelers to let it all out.
I think the point is that the coach is supposed to be the leader of the team and should set a good example.
Saying that the refs cost you the game is not setting a good example.
