last nov i bought my truck, it had been sitting for 17 years and was only driven a little during its storage, i replaced all the hoses and belts and cleaned everything up, put headers and dual flowmasters on it as my only non stock options.
when i put it in first and drive and then let the compression brake the truck i get a lot of pops and bangs like backfiring and if i mash it up till 50 and then let off the gas i get quieter pops. is there anything wrong with my EGR?? or do i need to get my carb rebuilt?? my carb already needs a rebuild, could this be causing it??
also does anyone know where i can find a 4sp manual to stuff behind my engine?
If there's an air pump on it, your problem may be a vacuum control valve (ported) that signals the thermactor to dump the air out of the system when decelerating and at idle. The rich condition when you decel and the added O2 provides a great cobination for detonation. -just an idea...
i replaced the plugs when i gave it a tune up last dec, there is no air pump on the truck, the only thing making it smog legal is the EGR. there wasnt even a catalytic converter on it. everything was tuned at a mechanic shop so it shouldnt be running too rich, should i just go ahead with a new carb and hope it solves things?
also would a 4sb of a 360 bolt up to my 460 or do i need a new bellhousing? and would that tranny handle the amounts of torque i am running, right now its 425 ft lbs. but soon it will be over 500??
