15" rims?

i have a 1977 F250. it still has the original rims and tires that come with it from the factory, i am looking to replace both but i am wondering if i can fit 15" rims on my truck. the stockers are 16.5" i would like the advantages of having the diversity of tires i can get with a 15" rim but if i cant fit it i cant fit it.

also does anyone know where i can get a 2" lifted coil for my front suspention, i havent seen any place where i can ger one for a F250, its a 2wd truck and i just want something to level it.

thanks

15" rims?

LAST EDITED ON 21-Jun-01 AT 05:24 AM (EST)[p]No, 15s will not fit. the front brakes are just too big. Id go with a 16, it has the safety lip, and a good tire selection. Also if ya get lucky an find em cheap (not hard to do actually) the stock 16 inch aluminum rims from the newer Fords (say 94-96) are made by Alcoa, and are the toughest alloy wheels you can own. Id go for a set of those.

As far as the springs. I want about the same lift for my F-350 and found that Van springs are longer than the truck springs. A set of E-350 springs (diesel equiped) should give you 2 inches of lift. The front will be stiffer, and you may have to see an alignment shop to correct the camber. A certain ammount of tilt is within Ford specs, so it all depends on how much your old springs have sagged, as if they are an inch lower now than new, and you go up 2, you technically should fall into the safe range. Good luck on the project.

You can put 15" rims on a f250, you just have to grind down the calipers where the wheel hits on them. A lot of my buddies run this setup. It can be a pain grinding the calipers though. I just put a set of 15x8 rims with 31x10.50's goodyear rt's on my 1970 F250 last tuesday, but i have drum brakes on the front and the rims fit just fine with drums. They sure look a lot better than the old 9.50x16.5 tires and white spoke wheels that use to be on there.

I think your thinkin of the 4wd brakes. all the 2wd brakes Ive seen have a bolt that holds the pad in place, like on my F-350. If you were to grind the assembly down enough to fit 15's, youd get inot the bolt area and mess everything up. The 4x4 brakes are completely different, and can be done. I have 38.5 Gumbo Mudders on 15 inch rims on my Dads 75 F-250 4x4. Standard offset even.

Why not go to a modern 16" wheel. Most new vehicles are now using 16" wheel and tires. You can find 16" wheels in a junk yard for about $30-50 each and there is a wide variety of tires made in 16". This is what I did with my 1970 F250 about 2 weeeks ago. I found a 1980 E250 van with good tires mounted on the 16" wheels in a local junk yard. 8 lug, 16" wheels. They had 235/85 16 tires. Good Luck.

15" rims?

I tried to put a set of 15x10 wheels on my '78 F-250 2wd, the back was good but the front calipers were too big, not allowing the wheel to even be bolted on.
Now, 16" rims are a good alternative because the market for them is wide open now. I just bought a pair of used Michelin LTX tires (265-75/16) w/ a boat load of tread for $20/each (these are for the front, I run 33x12.50x16.5s on 16.5x9.75 Super Camper Special rims on the rear) Just look around and you'll find some deals on 16" tires. Later, Doc
