I recently replaced all the power steering components after the gearbox. This newfound pressure caused the lower seal on the gearbox to go bad. What is the best way to go about fixing it. What kind of parts to buy? Do I need to remove the gearbox to do it?
Thanks
Aaron
hey arron that seal kit is called a lower sector shaft seal kit.it is fairly easy to replace. youll need to remove the pitman arm with a puller once it is removed you will see a snap ring remove this ring put a drain pan under the gearbox go topside and crank the truck up and turn the stearing wheel hard to the right or left this should blow the seals out. if it doesnt center the stearing wheel and go under the hood on the gear box there are two bolts side by side remove those bolts go back under the truck and tap the bottom of the shaft with a brass hammer or use a piece of wood to hit it with a steel hammer go back up top and remove the shaft after the shaft is out you can look down the housing and see the seals at the bottom take a long punch or screw driver and drive the old seals out clean out housing thouroly and replace the seals and washers as indicated ont the instructions look on the shaft and that plate that you took the two bolts out of has a o ring on it also this will come in the kit to install shaft back in the housing make sure you lubricate the shaft with grease supplied in kit or use wheel bearing grease instal both bolts and tighten them evenly, innstal pitman arm making sure everything is centered.the pitman arm has a spot where it looks like it has two splines missing this will line up with the spot on the pitman shaft instal nut and tighten to specs.fill with fluid and start it up rotating the stearing wheel left to right very slowley. should be good to go have any qs check back
