Is there anyone out there who can tell me why my truck continues to go throught starter. Do i just have a junk motor or junk parts or is there just something i am missing. My starter just went out tonight and its the 3rd one this year. not to mention i have put 2 alternators on it in the last year. Its not the starter selenoid either i just replaced that 4 weeks ago.
Well I don't know about the starter but if that's a stock Motorcraft 2G alternator (that was what was on my '87) it's the crappiest thing that could EVER be put on a vehicle. You need to upgrade to the Motorcraft 3G, which is conversely the most powerful and reliable alt around. Requires minor wiring changes and you have to take off the alternator bracket to grind off about 1/4" to make room for the larger alt.
Your starter might not be the problem. It could be the flywheel. If your starter has shims ,it may have too many or not enough. If the starter doesn't contact the flywheel correctly,it will put too much pressure on it and mess up the starter and flywheel both.
inspect the flywheel/flexplate for missing or worn teeth. but how is the starter dieing?
you may need to replace both neg/positive cables if they are stock. this could also be why your alt is having so much trouble. what rig/year are we talking about to
im not sure why or how they are going bad but they will work great for about 3 or 4 months and then just one day they will not work ... no warning or anything
check the cables & the ground straps ...you do have a ground strap from the motor to the frame don't you???
second....you didn't mention what kind of reman units you are using. Without naming names there are sone chains whose reman quality is poor at best, if your starter & alt are in the zone....i would seriuosly consider an upgrade.
just my .02
