Help with various engine designations

I'm a newly converted ford guy now, and I would like to ask what the difference is between the 351, the 351M, and the 351 Windsor? Are they the same engine or what? I remember the Windsor and Cleveland from years ago, just wondering if the "M" is the same as a Windsor? Thanks for getting me straight.

351C (cleveland) made in cleveland ohio, not a small block or a big block its kind of in between. it does not share many parts with any other engine. its considered the better performing of the 351,s but does suffer from some oiling problems. the 351W (windsor) made in windsor canada is a small bock (like the 289 and 302) many parts are interchageable among these engines. the 351m (modified) is a more modern version of the 351C
a Boss 302 is a 302 block with 351c heads on it.

Pretty good desctiption wlihntr. Three 351 engines, that is why those chevy terms (big block, small block) don't apply in the Ford world. Ford has engine families and there are more than 2. To get an idea, the families have been grouped together further down on the main forum page. Scroll down there and look. Displacements inside those families will interchange parts and accessories. Parts don't usually swap outside engine families.

Good explanations guys.

Crawdad, there is also a ton of info in the engine series forums to explain the specific details.

or

read this :

http://www.fordcobraengines.com/351c%20Differences.htm

Just disregard the reference to big block/small block

Well, I don't have my truck with me to look at and verify the engine type, but it is a 1988 F-250 witht the 351 engine. Would it be a "W" or a "M" in that model year? Thanks for all the help.

It would be a W.

There is actually one more 351, Ford calls it a 352 and it is a member of the FE engine family. They all have the same 4" bore and 3.5" stroke.
