I have a 73 f-250 4x4 with a 360 in it. I have a line on a 460 that is out of a truck, not sure what kind. I would really like to do the swap! Will it bolt to the motor mounts? The transmission? If not, what kind of tranny do I need, the one from the 460 is not available.
from what i know ,, your frame mounts for the motor are differant, the bell housing is different, so you are going to need to get the correct bell for your application, depending on whether you got auto or std trans.
I would stick with the 360 or go with a larger FE, for the nostalgic purpose. Besides the fact that swapping in that 460 is sometimes a lot more work than it is worth to beef up the current engine.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
If you have the NP435 or T18/19 you can get a bell housing to fit but if you have the C6, you'll have to get the tranny for the 460/429
The perches are different but L&L makes a kit for this.
I have the same exact truck (73 F250 4x4) and it had a 360. After checking the prices of mounts, headers... I decided to build a 390, then I found a 428 crank and made a 428.
If you are looking for more power, you can get a 428 crank and bore the 360 out to 40 or 60 without a problem. Good headers, intake and some porting and a nice dual pattern cam will make a ton of power.
Don't forget a lot of the truck engines got the lower compression pistons and really lacked in power. A low compression 360 won't be very impressive, a 9:1 390/410/428 would be very impressive.
