Want to upgrade my small tool box and chest I had for many years, so started looking at the options available. What a long list of possibilities. Sears Craftsman must offer about 3 or 4 grade levels of boxes and chests. Any idea what company makes the Sears boxes?
I want something BIG; at least 40 - 50" long so I never have to buy one again. Theres a line of boxes from Waterloo and then of course the Matcos, Macs and Snap On all cost as much as a small car. Are these boxes worth $4K - $8K ???
I figure to really splurge and spend maybe $1500 to get something nice but I see me going to the used market, probably E Bay to get it.
Your thoughts on this huge topic.
Look for a box with roller drawers. I think the rest is up to you(drawer locks ect.). Take a look in you local paper you may not only find a box but a box with tools. Good luck
If your going to be moving your box around all the time it pays to buy a good one . Thats why i own a snap on. It has held up good and one heck of a warranty on it . If your box will be sitting still most of the time the cheaper ones are fine.I have more money in my Tool box and tools, then all my vechicles cost LOL.. But thats also how i make my living. John
Most of the Craftsman boxes are made by Waterloo, except the cheapest line, dont know who makes those. I bought the 40" Craftsman bottom roll-away with the 6 long drawers, man do I like those long drawers. Now I'm eying that top 40" Husky chest they have at Home Depot, I like the way the lid opens up the whole top of it so you can see inside from eye level. The quality on the Craftsman boxes is pretty good for the price. Everywhere I have seen the Waterloo boxes advertised (same box as Sears) they are alot more than the Craftmans. The big Husky boxes seem to have ok quality. The smaller ones dont seem so nice. A used SnapOn or Matco would be great, but they still get alot of money for them even used. You can now upgrade a ball bearing Craftsman roll away to the heavy duty steel/rubber castors they put on the most expensive line. I'm going to that someday. The new Craftsman ball bearing boxes now have 'grip lock' drawer handles, which I thought was a cool idea untill I went down to Sears and saw them and noticed how many of the display models had broken 'grip lock' drawers.
Check your local yellow pages under: Industrial Equip. & Supply. The distributors almost always sell for less than retail. Most of them have access to more than 1 brand also, so you can do some comparison shopping. Definatley go w/ ball bearing slides, and if security is an issue look for tubular locks.
