I need some advice on tune-up tools. I have a 68 Ranger with a 390 that I want to tune-up and keep in tune. I know that I need a timing light, and probably a tach/dwell meter as well. I have a Pertronix Ignitor module on the way to replace the points.
I know that I don't need the fanciest pro model out there, as I will be an occasional user. So - what would you tool gods recommend?
I bought the Craftsman Advance timing light, with the little **** on the end of it, and it worked great and I really liked it, then one day I slipped my mind and hooked it up like a dwell-tach which blew up the timing light and that was it for that. I never did buy another one cause somebody ended up giving me an old one. It was a good light though and I think they still sell them for like 79 bucks at Sears.
Dont forget the vacuum gauge, It is absolutly amazing the things you can check with a good vacuum gauge...and its indispensible for setting air/fuel mixtures...timing light/tach-dwell/vacuum gauge are the minimum followed up by a good hand operated vacuum pump as well...
wish I done it years ago, wouldve saved me a lot of time AND money...
I have had a Sears timing advance light for eight years and no problem. Four of those years I was a mechanic at a dealer so it saw a lot of use and worked and held up just as well as more expensive models from the tool/toy truck guys.

I have an old Sears craftsman timing light that says Penske on it.
I have had that thing for at least 25 years, and it still works great!
I just bought my brother a craftsman profesional model, with the advance dial on the back, for $59.99 on sale.
You can't beat it for that price.
