Anybody who's installed a pre-pump filter find the need for a built in priming pump on the filter? Any problems with the pump getting airbound after changing filters for those units without a primer?
I know many use the Dahl 100, but I can't seem to find whether or not it has a primer.
Don't need a primer with the electric pump. I've found it is normally neccessary to cycle the key on and off three of four times after changing the big filter to get the system purged, but I have never had to pre-service or hand prime it.
I have a Dahl 150, which does not have a built in priming pump, and I don't think the 100 has one either. The manual for the 150 says one can be used, but is not necessary. However, there is a small port on the top of the 150 which can be filled with fuel after a filter change to help prime the system and eliminate air. I don't think the pump will have a problem getting airbound though. I know the 150 is probably overkill for what I have now, but I have plans to run a bigger fuel pump and bigger lines in the future and didn't want to have to buy another fuel filter later down the road. The 100 would be just fine for a mostly stock and sligtly modded truck that uses the stock pump.
After I did my Hutch mod, which required dropping the tank and replacing the lines from tank to the pump, so there was no fuel at all in the lines, the pump had no problems pulling fuel. Also, when you change the filter, you can fill the bowl up with diesel before you install it back onto the truck, which will also help eliminate air in the system. Without a priming pump (and maybe even with one), you'll never get all the air out when changing a filter, but enough should be gone that the pump won't have a problem and the air will be gone quickly. Two or three cycles of the key to activate the pump before starting after a filter change, and you will be good to go.
